Once a doctor or nurse gives you the depo shot, it releases a hormone called progestin into your body. Progestin stops you from getting pregnant by preventing ovulation. It also works by making your cervical mucus thicker. When your cervical mucus is thicker, the sperm can’t get through.
What are the side effects of Depo-Provera shot?
Depo-Provera can cause you to experience a number of side effects, including:
- Irregular menstrual periods or no periods at all, which is a safe benefit of the shot.
- Headaches.
- Nervousness.
- Depression.
- Acne.
- Changes in appetite.
- Weight gain.
- Excessive growth of facial and body hair.
How long does it take for the Depo shot to kick in?
Exactly when the birth control shot starts working depends on when you get it, but it never takes more than seven days to become effective. If you get the birth control shot within the first seven days after the start of your period, you’re protected from pregnancy immediately.
Do you get your period on the depo shot?

As you continue to use Depo-Provera Contraceptive Injection, you may skip a period or stop having periods completely. This is normal. More than half of all women who use Depo-Provera Contraceptive Injection for one year have no menstrual bleeding.
