Are discus fish easy to keep?

These fish are very difficult to keep… You can make Discus keeping as hard as you like! People do, but those who enjoy the best success and relish in the hobby will in the main keep things very simple. Feed them well, Discus will eat a lot. Keep your hands out of the tank!

10 adult Discus (14cm +) without companion fish and minimal plants / bog wood etc will require a minimum of 350 litres. There is no doubt that having too few Discus will lead to behaviourally problems (aggression / attempting to breed) as they grow and mature….. remember Discus are cichlids !

The recommended pH can be controversial since many people place great emphasis on this factor. In our experience, both wild-caught and captive-bred discus do well when the pH levels are between 6.8 and 7.6. The same thing applies with water hardness; discus are usually fine with soft to medium hardness.
